Dear #TeamMCPSS,

As Superintendent, I must make all decisions with the safety and well-being of our students and employees in mind. We all know and recognize that weather conditions can be unpredictable and forecasts may change quickly.

After careful consideration of the latest weather information and the potential for inclement weather in our area, I cannot risk anyone’s safety, as again, the weather conditions currently remain extremely unpredictable. Therefore, all Mobile County Public Schools campuses and offices will be closed on Friday, October 9, 2026. I completely understand that closing schools can create challenges for families, and I do not take that impact lightly.

I appreciate your patience, understanding, and flexibility as we navigate circumstances that are ultimately beyond our control. Please continue to monitor official MCPSS communication platforms for any additional information or updates.

Sincerely,

Chresal D. Threadgill

Daily Attendance and Student Preparedness Reminder

Daily attendance and on-time arrival support academic success, arts instruction, rehearsal participation, athletics, and student responsibility. Students are expected to be present and ready for instruction at the start of the school day. Students should attend school every day unless an absence is necessary. Students should arrive on campus with enough time to report to class before the tardy bell. Repeated tardiness may affect instructional time, rehearsal preparation, and academic progress. Absence notes and/or other required documentation should be submitted according to school procedures (by the third day of the students’ return). Families are encouraged to monitor attendance records and progress report information regularly.

Uniform Policy Reminder

Dunbar Creative and Performing Arts Magnet Middle School students are expected to follow the school uniform policy each day. Students must wear approved uniform pants. (jeggings or jean style uniform bottoms are not permitted) All students must wear all black tennis shoes (girls may wear navy blue oxford shoes as an approved option). Students must wear a button-down oxford shirt with the school “initials” embroidered on the left-side collar. Shirts should remain neat, appropriate, and aligned with school uniform expectations.

ID Badges

ID badges and lanyards are part of the daily uniform and must be visible at all times. The ID badge is used for lunch, attendance, media checkout, and student identification purposes. ID badges must be worn around the neck and be visible at all times. If your child loses his/her badge, the replacement cost is $5.00.

YONDR Pouches
Parents/guardians are required to purchase a Yondr pouch for their students ($25/each) if they prefer their devices stay on them during the school day. Students having their phone in the Yondr pouch is a privilege in accordance with district policy. Those who choose not to purchase a Yondr pouch must keep their devices OFF CAMPUS. If the student damages or loses the Yondr pouch, they are responsible for replacing it.

Dear Parents and Guardians,

At Dunbar, we believe that every minute of instructional time matters. We are asking for your support in making sure that your child arrives at school on time and ready to learn each day.

When students arrive late, even by a few minutes, they miss important parts of the instructional process. Teachers may already be giving directions, reviewing previous learning, introducing new material, or beginning classroom activities. Frequent tardiness can cause students to fall behind, disrupt the learning environment for other students, and make it more difficult for your child to stay on track academically.

Being on time also helps students develop important habits such as responsibility, punctuality, preparation, and accountability skills that will benefit them throughout their education and future careers.

We understand that mornings can sometimes be challenging. However, we encourage families to plan ahead, establish a consistent morning routine, and allow enough time for students to arrive at school on time.

Your partnership makes a difference. By ensuring that your child is at school and in class on time each day, you are helping us protect valuable instructional time and giving your child the best opportunity to be successful.

Thank you for your continued support and partnership in your child's education. Together, we can ensure that every student starts each school day prepared, focused, and ready to learn.

Sincerely,

Mr. Harris
